*Writing tools requires iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and a device compatible with Apple Intelligence. Automatic language detection requires iOS/iPadOS 16 or newer. Support for Thai and Vietnamese requires iOS/iPadOS 17. Arabic requires iOS/iPadOS 18.

The OS requirements for languages available to OCR are the same, but the new languages and automatic language detection were already enabled.

Automatic language detection and support for more languages when using text recognition on images and tables (on Macs running macOS 13 Ventura or newer).

The new languages are: Cantonese (China mainland), Cantonese (Hong Kong), Korean, Japanese, Russian, Ukrainian, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic (Modern Standard), Arabic (Najdi)

Thai and Vietnamese Requires macOS 14 Sonoma. Arabic requires macOS 15 Sequoia.

Apple Pencil Goes Pro

The big iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 update is here with support for dark and tinted app icons, Control Center widgets, and a whole new way of annotating using the Apple Pencil. Launch directly into the document scanner from the Control Center or use it instead of the torchlight and camera controls on your Lock Screen. Power up your Apple Pencil with hover previews and the new floating tool palette that appears on squeeze. Update your devices and download Highlights 2024.1 to take full advantage of the new features.

New Features

The big iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 update combined with a completely new way of annotating using the Apple Pencil:

  • Control Center widget
  • Lock Screen widget that can replace the camera and torchlight controls
  • Dark app icons
  • Tinted app icons and widgets
  • Hover preview for Apple Pencil
  • Squeeze the Apple Pencil Pro to bring up a floating tool palette around your pencil tip (also available to the double-tap gesture on Apple Pencil 2nd gen.)

These new Apple Pencil features require an iPad running iPadOS 17.5 or newer. Hover preview works with any Apple Pencil except the 1st generation. The floating tool palette requires an Apple Pencil Pro or the Apple Pencil 2nd generation (with the Double-tap gesture in Highlights set to Tool Palette in Settings > Apple Pencil).

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 iOS will officially be released on Monday September 16th.
